Obituary of Benjamin Sterk
Our beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, and cousin, age 34, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at his home in Lansing, Michigan. Ben struggled for many years with mental illness and substance abuse, to which he finally succumbed in death, despite his several attempts at rehabilitation. Ben was born on October 7, 1984, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Patricia Deventer and Calvin Sterk, and moved with them and his older sister Emily to Lansing, Michigan, in 1990.
Ben attended Oakdale Christian School, Post Oak School, Pattengill Middle School, Eastern High School, and Lansing Community College, where he studied to be a paralegal. As a child, Ben was funny, playful, curious, adventuresome, and loved cats and dogs. He was very bright, did well in school, played the drums, and enjoyed sports, especially golf and fishing. Ben had many good friends and was always ready to help anyone in need.
He is survived by his parents, Patricia Deventer and Calvin Sterk; his sister Emily and her husband Samuel Masri, and their children Wyatt, Emmitt, Rhys, and Everett; his grandmother, Elsa Deventer; his aunts and uncles: Janice Sterk, Marilyn and David Winzenz, Robert and Diane Sterk, Linda Sugarbaker, and Linda and E. Thomas McCarthy, and numerous cousins.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Family and friends are invited to share their memories of Ben online at www.tiffanyfuneralhome.com
