Stephen (Steve) Horton
Stephen (Steve) Horton was born January 3, 1933 in Greensboro, Alabama and departed this earth September 27, 2019 in Lansing, Michigan.
Steve confessed Christ at an early age and joined Sludger Baptist Church in Greensboro, Alabama. He was the oldest of 17 children and left home at an early age to serve his country in Korea. Upon returning from Korea, he met his first wife Sammie M. (Ash) Horton. Their union birthed 5 children. Steve moved to Lansing, Michigan in the mid 60’s and gained employment at Fisher Body - General Motors. He then sent for his wife and children, and established residency in Lansing with his family.
Steve was very active in the church where he served on the Deacon Board and sang in the men’s choir at Union Missionary Baptist Church. He then became a Freemason. Steve was one of the top skilled tradesmen at Fisher Body and one of the first African-Americans to have the skill and title. Steve was an avid bowler, loved listening to Blues and Gospel music, and talking on his CB radio as “Mr. BB”!
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Ezekiel and Carrie L (Diggins) Horton; his first wife, Sammie M. (Ash) Horton; and two sons, Charles E. and Robert E; nine siblings, Joe, Penny, Judy, Lula, Willie James, Georgia Mae, Jacob, Ezekiel and Austin.
He is survived by his wife, Crystal (McFadden) Horton; his daughters, Mary and Rhonda Horton of Lansing Michigan, and Yolanda Horton of Georgia; two step-daughters, Antwaneka McFadden and Shaneka Wells; 10 grandchildren, Kian M. Miller, Michael J. Jackson, Reuben J. Jackson, Charles J. Miller, Martrell T. Atwater, Markita S. Atwater, Ieasha J. Jackson, Dominique J. Jackson, Talisha N. Horton, and Justin D. Horton; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; 3 step- grandchildren; brothers, Sylvester, Abraham (Doris), and Emmanuel (Donna) of Alabama, and Samuel (Judy), Bobby, and Charles; sister, Josephine of Lansing Michigan; Frank (Louise) Ash Sr. of Lansing, and Rozell Ash of Alabama; sister-in-law, Lillie Ashe of Lansing; several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial Service is at 11 AM Saturday October 5, 2019 at Shiloah Baptist Church, 5225 S. Waverly Road, Lansing Michigan with Pastor Brown officiating. The family will receive friends 10-11AM at the Church prior to service. Repass will follow immediately after service.
