Obituary of Verna Jean Weakly

Verna Jean Weakly

Lansing, Michigan

On August 26, 1943, GOD blessed the union of Bishop Curry and Lois (Foster) Curry with the birth of their first child, Verna Jean Curry, in Little Rock, Ark.  Verna would live only a few years in Little Rock before relocating with her family to Lansing, MI.  There Verna received her formal education throughout the Lansing Public School District before graduating from J.W. Sexton High School in 1961.  She subsequently attended Lansing Community College.  Verna then met and married the love of her life, Charles Weakly, a member of the Royalaires, a professional gospel singing group.

For most of her youth, Verna was raised in the house of her maternal grandmother, Lextie Foster.  Verna accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was a devoted member of the congregation at Friendship Baptist Church.  In her adult life Verna attended Mt Olive Baptist Church and their congregation became her spiritual family until her death.

Throughout her adult life, Verna held employment at various job, including as a Teacher Aide at Moore Park Elementary School and worked for 25+ years for General Motors Corporation where she remained until retirement.

Verna was a humble person that was fiercely dedicated to her family.  She was a foster-parent who shared a great love and responsibility for children.  Verna was well known for having a generous heart and was always willing to help anyone in need.  She was well liked and respected by everyone she met.  She will always be loved and missed!!

On January 1, 2020, GOD called Verna home.  She leaves to carry on her memory and legacy, daughters L’Tanya Wells, Tamie Allen, L’kesha Weakly and Celeste Weakly, all of Lansing, MI., 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  Also, brothers: Curlee (Ruby) Foster, Anthony Curry, Don McCray and Brian McCray, all of Lansing, MI. and William McCray, III of Nashville, Tenn. Sisters: Geraldine Ruch and Patricia Terry, of Lansing, MI., Deloris Curry, Judy McCray and Hazel McCray, all of Detroit, MI. and Lisa Arnold, of Murfreeboro, Tenn.  As well as sister Mary (Curry) Howard, of Dallas, TX., from the union between Bishop Curry and June Stone.  Verna also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and friends, especially long-time friend Betty Patterson-James.

Verna was preceded in death by both parents, Bishop Curry and Lois McCray, husband, Charles Weakly, sister Stella McCray and Very Special Grandmother, Lextie Foster.
